Sedarvp Ghana and GIF Host Webinar on the theme “Redefining Traditions: Cultural Evolution and Gender Equality”.

On 15th May 2025, Sedarvp Ghana, in collaboration with GIF, hosted an engaging and impactful webinar on “Redefining Traditions” as part of the Digitally Together for Gender Equality project. The virtual event brought together over 80 young people and representatives from partner organizations to explore how cultural traditions intersect with gender equality in today’s digital world.

The webinar opened a vital conversation about how long-standing customs and beliefs—while central to identity and heritage—can sometimes reinforce gender stereotypes and inequalities. Speakers highlighted the importance of recognizing and adapting cultural practices to promote inclusion, equity, and progress.

Key Themes and Insights:

  • Tradition, Culture, and Gender: Participants examined how tradition (customs passed down from ancestors) and culture (the way of life of a group) shape gender roles. Gender was defined not just biologically, but in terms of opportunities, rights, and expectations for all individuals.
  • Challenging Harmful Norms: One of the central discussions was about the outdated belief that a woman’s place is solely in the kitchen or limited to domestic responsibilities. This sparked meaningful dialogue about modern gender roles.
  • Female Genital Mutilation (FGM): The group delved into the cultural practice of FGM and the harmful myth that it prevents female promiscuity. The discussion emphasized the importance of education and advocacy to end such practices.
  • Evolving Traditions in a Changing World: Participants discussed how traditions can evolve through exposure to new ideas, technology, and interaction with diverse cultures. Culture is not static—it can grow to support a more equal and just society.
  • Awareness and Advocacy: The conversation also focused on strategies to raise awareness about harmful gender norms, combat stereotypes, and empower women and girls to reach their full potential.

As one participant aptly put it, “A fair society leads to better outcomes for everyone.” While traditions are valuable, they should be examined and transformed where necessary to ensure they benefit both men and women equally.

This webinar served as a powerful reminder that youth voices matter in shaping a more inclusive future—and that together, we can challenge norms, redefine traditions, and build a world where gender equality is the standard.
