Agriculture and Environment

Agric

Agriculture contributes 54 % to Ghana’s GDP, and accounts for over 40 % of export earnings, while at the same time provides over 90 % of the food needs of the country. Ghana’s agriculture, which is predominantly smallholder, traditional, and rain-fed- has been declining due to poor agricultural practices and bad weather resulting from global warming. This project therefore aims at introducing modern methods of agriculture to our farmers that will improve their productivity in terms of quality and quantity. These methods, which includes irrigation, use of bio pesticides and sustainable cultivation practices, are environmentally friendly and good at complementing the unreliable weather facing farmers in Ghana.

Volunteers will assist the community folks to overcome the tough economic conditions inhibiting their rural livelihoods. . Volunteers will be expected to work in the organic fields and live with local farmers and their families. Participants will find that they will be busy working in organic fields, growing food crops. They will also provide support to farmers engaged in the field of animal husbandry. This will equip volunteers with valuable learning experience of Ghana’s animal husbandry, and farming methods; and the opportunity to also transfer their knowledge and skills to these communities. Those volunteers who can bring new ideas and farming methods to the villages can help greatly in an area where only basic farming methods are used. By supplying free labour, participants on this program are supporting these villagers – allowing farmers to increase production and earn enough money to support their families. This promises to be a wonderful experience for volunteers to learn about the Ghanaian way of farming, working and living among its friendly villagers and absorbing its rich culture – all while helping to keep families together.

Volunteers on this project will also be under the guidance of local project coordinators / agriculturalists therefore past experience and skills are of an advantage, but it is not a must. They will be working closely with local farmers in fields. Volunteer get involved teaching language class in the morning and cultivation in the field after noon or in the evening. We will have flexible working days from Monday to Friday and weekends are left free to explore local tourist sites.

Goals of this Project:

  1. Help to keep rural families and villages together
  2. Increase food production
  3. Teach locals new ideas and farming methods
  4. Expose volunteers and locals alike to different people and cultures

Those volunteers who can bring new ideas and farming methods to the villages can help greatly in an area where only basic farming methods are used.
