SEDARVP GHANA TRAINS STUDENTS OF TOLON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN SOAP MAKING.

SEDARVP-Ghana in collaboration with Girls Empowerment Mission (GEM Ghana) embarked on a capacity building project at Tolon Senior High School (SHS) to train young girls in basic liquid soap making techniques. The purpose of the project was to educate the young girls on basic soap making skills so as to enable them strive for self-sufficiency during and after school.The Sedarvp-Ghana team was led by Ms Rukaya, the officer in charge of volunteers for the organization. Other participants from Sedarvp-Ghana included Ms Farhana, Mr Ismail, and two volunteers from University for Development Studies, Madam Aisha and Madam Rebecca. Mr. Alex, a member from the partnering organization was also on the grounds to facilitate the process. The colorful event which was marked by glee from students promises long lasting benefits in the lives of the participants.In the Northern parts of the Ghana, studies have shown that majority of girls from the rural community migrate to the Southern part of the country to seek jobs after their BECE or WASSCE examination. This and other reasons informed Sedarvp’s decision to empower the young girls with the soap making skills, which will help them remain in their communities and iniate their own self surviving business. The project also has an objective of poverty alleviation among young and vulnerable girls.The girl student participants numbering about 70 were trained on how to arrange and mix chemicals in their right qualities, the use of protective clothing in the production process as well as packaging of the product for the market.This project, from all indications will serve as a source of livelihood (jobs) for the young girls. The participants were allowed to take turns in the production process so to give them first-hand knowledge of the production process. In all 100 bottles were produced after the training, which were then distributed amongst the students who participated in the exercise.The students expressed their heartfelt joy and thanked Sedarvp Ghana and GEM Ghana for empowering them on this life long soft skills.
